Bleeding gums are a telltale sign that something is wrong inside your mouth. Most patients will simply ignore bleeding gums as a sign that they may be brushing too hard, however healthy gums should not easily bleed. If you notice some blood when you are finished brushing your teeth, please do not ignore it as there may be a more serious underlying condition.

What Could Be The Cause of Bleeding Gums

• Aggressive Brushing: Sometimes, the cause can be obvious such as simply brushing too hard may be the cause of your gums bleeding. It is common for a patient’s gums to bleed if you are brushing too hard or possibly using a toothbrush in which the bristles are too hard. You may also want to try an electric toothbrush if this is the cause for your bleeding gums as most electric toothbrushes come built in with pressure sensors.
• Unrelated Medications: If you are taking other medications for another condition that you may have, then certain medications can thin your blood causing your gums to bleed easier. Even some over the counter product such as ibuprofen cause your blood to thin as well.
• Flossing: Flossing is highly recommended for the highest level of oral hygiene to be achieved. However, you may notice that when you floss, your gums tend to bleed. This is most likely due to your technique of flossing. If you are new to flossing it may take a few days for your gums to adjust and for you to learn proper technique for flossing.
• Gingivitis: It may be hard to believe, but you may have the beginning signs of gum disease. The beginning stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Although gum disease is usually not painful, it is a very serious condition that should not be ignored. Gum disease can lead to tooth loss and can develop into a more advanced form of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis has been linked to more serious health conditions such as a stroke. Gingivitis can be prevented and reversed, so it is best to battle it as soon as you notice the first signs, which are bleeding gums.
