What To Know About Root Canals

A lot of people avoid root canals because they’re afraid of the pain. Fortunately, dental technology is getting better every day. Root canals are quicker and less painful than ever before. If your dentist recommends a root canal, it’s probably your best option. Ignoring the problem can mean that the tooth will need to be removed and replaced – a painful and much more complicated process.

What Is a Root Canal?

The actual root canal is a channel of pulp that runs through the roots of the tooth. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue -all things your teeth need to grow. Sometimes this pulp can get infected. If this happens, a root canal procedure can be used to clean out the infected pulp. Once a tooth is fully grown, it no longer needs the pulp to stay healthy. People are often afraid that a root canal treatment will be painful. Actually, most people are in so much pain before the surgery, that the treatment brings instant relief.

How Does It Work?

Dr. Sal Lotardo will make a small hole in the back of your tooth. Through this hole he will remove the infected pulp and clean the inside of the tooth. Then the tooth will be filled and sealed. This will stabilize the tooth and keep it clean and healthy in the future. This can all be completed in just one visit. Even better, you will only need a local anesthetic.

Dr. Lotardo sometimes recommends a dental filling or crown to finish off your treatment. This can be completed in a second visit to his office.
