Do you play contact sports? If so, you are probably familiar with protective mouthguards. If you have only ever used a store-bought mouthguard, you likely think of them as uncomfortable, even painful. But have you ever tried a custom mouthguard? A professionally made custom-fit mouthguard is both more comfortable and more effective than a standardized mouthguard.
A custom mouthguard is more expensive than any over-the-counter option, so what makes them worth the money? In essence, a custom-fit mouthguard offers a better fit than any over-the-counter option, even a boil-and-bite, can provide. A better fit is your best bet if you have any sort of oral appliance or braces, both for protecting your expensive appliance and for protecting your mouth from the appliance itself. An ill-fitting mouthguard made from inferior materials can itself cause cuts and abrasion to the inside of the mouth. A snug fit also protects the teeth more effectively. A fitted mouthguard won’t slip and leave teeth vulnerable to tooth damage and doesn’t require you to clench your jaw to hold them in place. They are more effectively supportive and shock-absorbing than store-bought options. When it comes down to it, custom mouthguards have several advantages:
You only have one set of teeth, so why not give them the best of care?
Getting a custom-fitted mouthguard typically requires at least two visits. At the first visit, we will take molds of your teeth. These impressions will ensure that your mouthguard exactly matches your teeth for a snug fit. We will use these molds to fabricate your mouthguard. One it has been made, we will check the fit at another appointment and make any necessary adjustments. Once you are completely happy with your new mouthguard, you are ready to take it home and enjoy greater comfort and protection.
