Sedation Dentistry: What to Know

Sedation dentistry is usually used to help patients that have a fear of the dentist get the dental care they need. However, sedation dentistry can benefit many other people as well. Dr. Sal Lotardo of Bella Smiles, a dentist in Riverhead, Roslyn, and Nesconset, NY, explains what you should know about sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using medication to make sure patients are relaxed and calm throughout your procedure. At Bella Smiles, we offer multiple types of sedation. First is nitrous oxide, often known as laughing gas. This takes effect quickly when you breathe in through a mask on your nose.

Laughing gas keeps you relaxed and calm throughout the procedure, but still alert enough to answer any questions the dentist may have through the procedure. It wears off quickly as well, so you’ll be able to drive yourself home from your appointment.

We also offer oral conscious sedation. This is sometimes used in conjunction with laughing gas. It comes in the form of a prescribed pill that you take about an hour before your procedure. Oral sedation offers deeper sedation than laughing gas. You may fall asleep or find you don’t remember parts of the procedure. Since the effects take longer to wear off, you’ll need a ride to and from your appointment.

Taking on Dental Anxiety

You typically hear of sedation dentistry being used to help patients with a fear of the dentist. Dental anxiety can occur on a spectrum. Some patients are only triggered by procedures that involve the sound of the dental drill. Other patients may suffer from dental anxiety that’s so severe that they avoid dental work altogether.

Not getting regular dental care can contribute to severe dental problems down the road. Sedation dentistry allows patients with dental anxiety to get the care that they need. More procedures can be completed in one session, meaning they don’t have to come to the office as often. It also allows them to get the dental care that’s necessary to keep the mouth healthy.

Other Sedation Dentistry Benefits

Sedation dentistry isn’t just for patients that have dental anxiety. It’s also beneficial for patients that have a severe gag reflex. The gag reflex typically fights against the dentist while they’re trying to provide care. With sedation, they’re able to relax the gag reflex and make treatment more comfortable for the patient.

Sedation can also allow patients with certain medical conditions to get care. Both children and certain patients may be unable to sit still long enough to get the treatment that’s necessary for their health. Sedation makes it easier to do so.
