Orthodontics can be used for cosmetic purposes and to realign crooked teeth for an improved bite. Bella Smiles offers orthodontic care for children and adults with treatment options that include Invisalign® invisible braces.
As a family dentist serving Riverhead, Nesconset and Roslyn, NY, Dr. Lotardo can monitor the development of your child’s permanent teeth and make appropriate orthodontic care recommendations when necessary for long term oral health. In some cases, early orthodontic treatment can avoid more complex dental problems as your child grows and lay the foundation for a beautiful and healthy smile.
If your child has certain habits that can affect tooth development, such as thumb sucking, Dr. Lotardo can work with you to ensure they will enjoy a functional smile through the use of oral appliances or phase one orthodontics.
A member of the American Orthodontic Society, Dr. Lotardo has the advanced training and experience necessary to provide effective orthodontic care in our Riverhead family dentist office. The convenience of being able to meet all of the oral health needs of a growing family in one location makes it easier to keep everyone’s smile looking its best.
Orthodontics Care & Treatment Options
Dr. Lotardo will meet with you to perform a thorough evaluation of your oral health and tooth placement, including digital diagnostics as needed. Depending on the severity of your bite problem and cosmetic goals, he will recommend the most suitable treatment option. The goal of treatment is to improve both the aesthetics and function of your smile with lasting results that will support long term dental health.
Bella Smiles offers both traditional metal braces and Invisalign clear retainers for addressing a wide range of orthodontic related concerns. While invisible braces may be the preferred option, especially for teen and adult patients, in cases where there is a bite issue or teeth are severely misaligned, traditional braces and oral appliances may be the recommended option for the best result.
Traditional style braces are often the best choice for younger patients.
Dr. Lotardo will explain all aspects of treatment, expected results and related costs for your consideration. Your orthodontic care will require routine visits with us to monitor progress and make any adjustments as needed.
Invisalign® at Bella Smiles
Dr. Lotardo is a North Fork area Invisalign provider for teen and adult patients with a range of mild to moderate cosmetic or dental health concerns. Using a series of clear, comfortable and removable aligners, Invisalign will gently reposition your teeth for a straighter, healthier smile.
The material used to create your aligners is called SmartTrack®, a clear plastic that is ultra-thin and very durable. They are designed to fit firmly against your teeth and to avoid irritation of your lips, tongue, and gums.
Invisalign is also ideal for adult patients who have experienced changes in the bite and shifting of teeth after previous orthodontic care and desire discreet, expedient treatment.
This popular clear braces system allows the patient to remove the aligners to eat a regular diet and brush and floss normally. In general, they should be worn for about 22 hours a day. They are very discreet and will not stain your tooth enamel.

Orthodontic Care FAQs
Which orthodontics treatment option is best for me?
The type of orthodontic treatment you may need will depend on a variety of factors. Factors such as age, medical and dental history, they type of malocclusion condition you have, and more will play a role in your treatment. Fortunately, today’s orthodontic treatments are very versatile and require minimal qualifications for most patients.
That means that you may not be limited to a single treatment, but you will have to visit your dentist to find out which is best for your unique smile.
Do I need to wear a retainer after orthodontics treatment?
Yes. The best thing you can do to prevent orthodontic relapse and permanently keep your teeth straight after braces is to wear a retainer. A retainer helps train teeth to stay in their new position after braces have completed forcing them into the straight position.
Some patients that neglect to wear their retainer for the same amount of time they had braces will experience orthodontic relapse sometime in their life.
Will clear aligners give me a lisp?
No. As with any orthodontic treatment, there is a short period of time in the beginning where you will be getting used to your treatment. During this time, you may notice slight discomfort, and speech issues. This is natural and only temporary while your mouth is getting used to this new transition.
How many times do you have to go to the orthodontist before and while getting braces?
Most patients go to their dentist a few months prior to getting braces, and also a few weeks prior to check on your bite. Patients should also schedule dental cleanings and visits every six months while undergoing braces treatment.
What can you not do after getting braces?
After getting braces patients have some restrictions they should follow to have the best orthodontic experience. Patients should avoid eating chewy candies, popcorn, chewing ice, and drinking soda. They should also wear a mouthguard for athletic activities.
